In current law, if a service member's driver's license expires while they are serving on active duty outside of Colorado, the driver's license expiration date is extended for 3 years or until 90 days after the service member returns to the state. The bill designates the service member's dependents as also subject to the extension of their driver's license expiration date.

(a) "Dependent" means:

(II) A service member's child; and
Page 2, Line 15(III) An individual for whom a service member has provided
Page 2, Line 16more than one-half of the individual's support for at least one
Page 2, Line 17hundred eighty days immediately preceding the expiration of a license referred to in this section.
Page 2, Line 18(b) "Service member" means a member of the United States armed forces.
Page 2, Line 19SECTION 2. Act subject to petition - effective date. This act
Page 2, Line 20takes effect January 1, 2027; except that, if a referendum petition is filed
Page 3, Line 1pursuant to section 1 (3) of article V of the state constitution against this
Page 3, Line 2act or an item, section, or part of this act within the ninety-day period
Page 3, Line 3after final adjournment of the general assembly, then the act, item,
Page 3, Line 4section, or part will not take effect unless approved by the people at the
Page 3, Line 5general election to be held in November 2026 and, in such case, will take
Page 3, Line 6effect January 1, 2027, or on the date of the official declaration of the vote thereon by the governor, whichever is later.
