Concerning vehicle transactions for deployed military families.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Colorado:
SECTION 1. In Colorado Revised Statutes, 42-2-118, amend (2); and add (6) as follows:
42-2-118. Renewal of license in person, by mail, or electronically - donations to Emily Keyes - John W. Buckner organ and tissue donation awareness fund - rules - report - definitions - repeal. (2) Every license referred to in this section which is at the time of its expiration, as provided in subsection (1) of this section, held by a service member, of the armed forces of the United States, then serving on active duty outside of this state, shallor their dependent, does not expire as provided in subsection (1) of this section, but suchthe expiration date shall beis extended for a period of three years or until ninety days after suchthe licensee returns to this state, whichever occurs first.
(6) As used in this section:
(a) "Dependent" means:
(I) A service member's spouse;
(II) A service member's child; and
(III) An individual for whom a service member has provided more than one-half of the individual's support for at least one hundred eighty days immediately preceding the expiration of a license referred to in this section.
(b) "Service member" means a member of the United States armed forces.
SECTION 2. Act subject to petition - effective date. This act takes effect January 1, 2027; except that, if a referendum petition is filed pursuant to section 1 (3) of article V of the state constitution against this act or an item, section, or part of this act within the ninety-day period after final adjournment of the general assembly, then the act, item, section, or part will not take effect unless approved by the people at the general election to be held in November 2026 and, in such case, will take effect January 1, 2027, or on the date of the official declaration of the vote thereon by the governor, whichever is later.
