Dear Colleagues:

You continue to impress me with your dedication and resiliency as we have embarked on some of the most challenging times in recent memory. Through it all, you have maintained your service to the public of Clackamas County.

While 2020 is behind us, there are continuing challenges in 2021. Both thousands of miles away at the U.S. Capitol last week and most recently closer to home. I want to acknowledge and recognize that many of us are effected by the violent actions at the U.S. Capitol last week. Yesterday, the media reported statements made by a recently elected County Commissioner on a social media page prior to his coming into office.

Clackamas County is strengthened and enriched by our diversity. We are committed to providing a safe and inclusive community for all County employees, residents and visitors. The County remains steadfast in our commitment to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion internally for employees and externally for our residents. Violence or harmful statements do not reflect the values of Clackamas County or its employees.

As reflected in the Resolution Condemning Violence and Racism by the Board of County Commissioners passed in June 2020, the County is working to confront systemic bias, institutionalized racism and disparities that vulnerable and marginalized communities face to ensure that Clackamas County is a safe place for all to thrive.

Many of us are impacted by recent events and are still feeling the effects of this past year. We have all been through a lot. I want to assure you that you are not alone and there is help to get us through these challenging times.

You can always reach out to your supervisor and me. Please visit the Wellness page to learn about ways to take care of yourself and learn more about the Employee Assistance Program at http://web1.clackamas.us/wellness. There is also the Racial Equity Hotline https://www.linesforlife.org/racial-equity-support-line/ for those experiencing racial impacts.

It is up to each of us to work towards healing ourselves before we can serve and heal our community.

Thank you for your service and everything you do to better the lives of the public of Clackamas County.

Gary Schmidt, County Administrator
