High Ground is a real-time stealth-survival VR game for Meta Quest inspired by the 1986 classic The Sentinel (known as The Sentry in the US). From your space station hub, descend to alien worlds and reach the summit to disable the Overseer before sunrise. Every movement drains energy. Wraiths teleport to your location on sight. Patrols sweep the terrain searching for intruders. Sentries defend the Overseer's approach. Portal across chasms, recharge at scattered platforms, and reach the high ground — before daylight exposes you. Solo or multiplayer up to 4 players.
Inspired by the tension and isolation of the 1986 strategy classic The Sentinel — known as The Sentry in the US, and described at the time as "the first virtual reality game" for its pioneering 3D graphics — High Ground reimagines those mechanics for actual virtual reality hardware, placing players inside a world where every step is a calculated risk and the enemy never stops watching.
Your mission begins aboard a space station hub — your command center, level select, and last moment of safety. Look out at the planet below. The Overseer waits at the summit. Descend, climb, and disable it before sunrise. What happens between touchdown and the peak is anything but predictable.
High Ground takes you across multiple alien worlds — volcanic mountains, frozen forests, desert coastlines, tropical islands. Each world is a completely different challenge with unique terrain and atmosphere. But one thing never changes: every movement drains your energy, and the Overseer's beam never stops sweeping from the summit above.
Three enemy types stand in your way. Wraiths are fast, spectral, and capable of teleporting directly to your location the moment they spot you. Patrols sweep the terrain in unpredictable patterns, searching for intruders and forcing constant route changes. Sentries defend the Overseer's approach — heavily armed and relentless as you near the summit. At the peak, the Overseer itself projects a powerful energy-draining beam across the world below. Get caught in it and your power depletes rapidly — exposure means failure.
Your tools are limited but powerful. Your portal ability lets you leap across impossible gaps and reach higher ground — recharging at scattered platforms across each world. Your EMP disrupts enemies temporarily. Managing energy, timing portals, and avoiding the Overseer's beam is the difference between reaching the summit and starting over.
In multiplayer races, up to four players descend together. EMPs become weapons against rivals as much as enemies. Blast a competitor off a ledge. Deny a recharge platform. Race to the summit while the Overseer hunts you all.
High Ground was designed with optimization and routing in mind. Short run times, portal-based movement tech, energy management decisions, and multiple distinct worlds create a foundation suited for competitive speedrunning. JV Games Inc. will establish an official speedrun.com category at launch with an initial baseline time, inviting the community to find faster routes to the summit.
"We've been making games together since the late '80s, and I've been obsessed by the idea of VR since reading William Gibson's Neuromancer as a kid, but the technology always fell short of the vision. We wanted to recreate the tension of The Sentinel — that feeling of being hunted by something that never stops — and put that inside of a headset."

JV Games Inc. is an independent game studio founded by Jag Jaeger and Vince Valenti — two developers who have been building games together since the late 1980s. What started as a garage studio operation has grown into a focused indie team with a philosophy that has never changed: small, controlled games built with craftsmanship and purpose.
The studio's credits include the acclaimed Towers RPG series for the Atari ST — with Towers II earning a 93% review score in ST Format Magazine — and Warhammer: Battle for Atluma for Sony PSP in 2006, a licensed tactical card game whose complexity competed with Magic the Gathering.
High Ground is JV Games' first Meta Quest release. A second title, Stone Fall — a story-driven VR tactical RPG set in a lost dwarven civilization — is currently in development targeting Q1 2027.
