A place where we can encounter Him as a family, that we can take 00:18.720 --> 00:30.040 everything from this week that we have stored up in our alabaster jar and break 00:30.040 --> 00:33.480 I'm going to speak a little bit and you'll have an understanding of what I'm 00:33.480 --> 00:43.440 speaking out about as I speak it. So we're gonna start in Matthew chapter 26 verses 00:44.120 --> 00:57.620 36 through 46. Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane and said to 00:57.620 --> 01:02.540 the disciples, sit here while I go and pray over there. And he took with him 01:02.540 --> 01:08.440 Peter and the two sons of Zebedee. And he began to be sorrowful and deeply 01:08.440 --> 01:14.200 distressed and he said to them, my soul is exceedingly sorrowful even to death. 01:14.660 --> 01:20.380 Stay here and watch with me. He went a little farther and fell on his face and 01:20.380 --> 01:25.560 prayed saying, oh my father if it is possible let this cup pass from me 01:25.560 --> 01:31.820 nevertheless not as I will but as you will. Then he came to the disciples and 01:31.820 --> 01:37.300 found them sleeping and said to Peter, what could you not watch with me one 01:37.300 --> 01:44.200 hour? Watch and pray lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is 01:44.200 --> 01:48.900 willing but the flesh is weak. And he came and found them asleep again for their 01:58.900 --> 02:04.380 eyes were heavy. So he left them, went away again and prayed for the 02:05.160 --> 02:11.120 third time saying the same words. Then he came to his disciples and said to 02:11.120 --> 02:17.420 them, are you still sleeping and resting? Behold the hour is at hand and the 02:17.420 --> 02:23.180 son of man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise let us be 02:23.180 --> 02:29.400 going. See my betrayer is at hand. We're going to break down the scripture a 02:29.400 --> 02:34.240 little bit give us some insight but today we're going to be talking about 02:34.240 --> 02:41.460 persistency and perseverance and prayer. And it doesn't come naturally to us to 02:41.460 --> 02:45.760 to have persistency and perseverance and prayer. It's actually something we 02:45.760 --> 02:51.240 have to work out. It's something that we have to create our flesh to 02:51.240 --> 02:59.540 submit unto. And so and it's hard. It's something our flesh does not like. So it 02:59.540 --> 03:03.860 says in the beginning when Jesus came to them to a place called Gethsemane. 03:04.280 --> 03:09.840 And in Luke it's actually written that it says that he was accustomed to go 03:09.840 --> 03:14.180 Jesus was accustomed to go there. In another word it was habitual. It was a 03:14.180 --> 03:18.980 habit of his to go to the Garden of Gethsemane or the Mount of Olives I 03:18.980 --> 03:25.920 believe Luke talks about. And most likely I think it's just to pray or to be with God. 03:26.320 --> 03:30.700 And this is something that the disciples saw consistently in the Lord. And this 03:30.700 --> 03:34.420 time around they did follow him. And I think previous times they followed him 03:34.420 --> 03:40.320 too because of their reaction, their response to Jesus as he's praying. It 03:40.320 --> 03:45.960 seems like this was a normal occurrence to them. And they didn't respond in a 03:45.960 --> 03:52.360 way if you saw that in an alarm. And he said to the disciples, sit here while I 03:52.360 --> 03:56.460 go and pray over there. And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee. 03:57.100 --> 04:00.820 This is the same crew he took with him when he went to the Mount to be 04:00.820 --> 04:06.980 transfigured. So there is something that he found in James, John and Peter 04:06.980 --> 04:13.160 that he trusted them and he found support in them to bring with him to 04:13.160 --> 04:18.400 leave the rest of the disciples and to take with him deeper into the garden to 04:18.400 --> 04:26.520 pray. And he began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. And he said to them, 04:26.600 --> 04:31.820 my soul is exceedingly sorrowful even unto death. And this is the instruction 04:31.820 --> 04:38.620 he gives them. Stay here and watch with me. And in the strong's concordance 04:38.620 --> 04:45.960 for this word watch it means to keep awake, to be villageant, to wake and to 04:45.960 --> 04:51.820 watch. And then the word that this word derives from, it actually talks about 04:53.000 --> 04:59.600 to wake from inactivity. And so around this time it was actually about 04:59.600 --> 05:02.920 midnight scholars say that it was about midnight when Jesus went into the 05:02.920 --> 05:08.000 Garden of Gethsemane. So it was late. I'm sure the disciples were tired. I'm 05:08.000 --> 05:15.240 sure Jesus was tired. And he specifically asked them after going into prayer. 05:15.460 --> 05:21.600 Because when he separated the trio and himself from the disciples, they went 05:21.600 --> 05:27.080 farther on. And he didn't ask them of anything. He just started praying. 05:27.520 --> 05:32.380 At least that's what the scripture says. But it says that he began to be 05:32.380 --> 05:36.780 sorrowful and deeply distressed. So then he did ask of them. He said, 05:36.780 --> 05:44.440 Hey, can you watch with me? And so with that, 05:46.400 --> 05:53.360 he specifically asked them to watch with him, not to watch for him, not to be 05:53.360 --> 05:58.080 with him, but to watch with him. Because the Lord was already being 05:58.080 --> 06:03.980 watchful at this time. He was praying. And in my eyes, I think the Lord, 06:03.980 --> 06:09.240 it sounds like to me, at least when I'm reading this, it's kind of implied as the 06:09.240 --> 06:18.900 Lord is praying and being impacted with sorrow and distress. It would seem 06:18.900 --> 06:23.920 natural for them to follow in that same suit, at least to follow their rabbi, 06:24.060 --> 06:28.760 right? So if he's praying and being watchful, you would assume that they 06:28.760 --> 06:33.480 would pray and be watchful as well. And as we go later on, it seems like 06:33.480 --> 06:40.400 that was not the case. So it was to be awake with him and support and 06:40.400 --> 06:45.720 hopefully pray with him, even though he wasn't specific with that. So it says, 06:45.780 --> 06:49.920 He went a little farther and fell on his face and prayed, saying, Oh, my 06:49.920 --> 06:55.800 father, if it is possible, let this cup pass for me. Nevertheless, not as I 06:55.800 --> 07:01.220 will, but as you will. Then he came to his disciples and found them 07:01.220 --> 07:06.200 sleeping. And it's interesting because he found them sleeping and yet 07:06.200 --> 07:10.140 there's a reason why the scripture is written because they heard his prayer. 07:11.340 --> 07:16.900 So either they were physically sleeping, which some of them were, but at 07:16.900 --> 07:21.220 least one of them had to have heard what Jesus was praying because Jesus 07:21.220 --> 07:26.100 and this trio were separated from everyone else. There's no one else 07:26.100 --> 07:30.040 there. So in order for it to be written down and have an eyewitness 07:30.040 --> 07:36.640 account, one of them had to have heard what Jesus was praying. And that 07:36.640 --> 07:42.260 kind of hits a little bit harder because Jesus comes to them. He already 07:42.260 --> 07:47.860 asked them to be watchful. He said, Hey, I need you to stay up. I know 07:47.860 --> 07:54.220 you're tired. I'm tired too. I need you to stay up and assuming, at least 07:54.220 --> 07:57.880 I'm assuming that they would pray along with their rabbi, with their 07:57.880 --> 08:04.820 savior, with the Christ, the Messiah. But they heard him. 08:09.310 --> 08:13.510 The other thing is, I think they were comfortable with Jesus and who he was to them 08:15.490 --> 08:19.790 because even in the state that he was in, they didn't move. They weren't 08:19.790 --> 08:24.210 alarmed with him being deeply distressed and sorrowful. They weren't 08:24.210 --> 08:28.610 alarmed with his prayer to the Lord, you know, saying, Oh, let this cup 08:28.610 --> 08:35.930 pass from me. Because their response is sleeping. And if not fully sleeping, 08:36.610 --> 08:47.180 that's even worse in my eyes. And said to Peter, What could you not watch with me 08:47.180 --> 08:52.720 one hour? Watch and pray lest you enter temptation. You know, it's interesting, 08:52.820 --> 08:56.360 he only calls out Peter there, even though James and John is there as well. 08:58.240 --> 09:04.900 You know, and I think my perspective of why it was Peter, because to Peter, it was given much. 09:06.340 --> 09:12.020 There was a calling that he publicly laid on Peter in front of the disciples. 09:13.140 --> 09:18.660 Peter at that time was the only married one. Or if in general, I'm not really sure, 09:19.060 --> 09:25.060 but he was the married one. There was already a sense of responsibility to him. There was 09:25.060 --> 09:28.680 already a revelation. He's the one. Peter is the one that walked on the water. 09:29.080 --> 09:37.680 Peter is the one that said, You are the Messiah. So Peter was revealed, there was revealed more 09:37.680 --> 09:44.520 to Peter. And he was able to be a step closer to Jesus because of his willingness, his desire. 09:46.180 --> 09:49.500 And I'm sure you guys have heard this, but the more that you are given, 09:49.500 --> 09:55.480 the more is required of you. And so I think there's a reason why he called out Peter. 10:00.480 --> 10:06.360 And he was chastising him for not obeying Jesus because he already came to them and said, 10:06.400 --> 10:14.960 Hey, I need you to be watchful. And now Jesus plainly tells them exactly what he wants them to do. 10:16.640 --> 10:21.580 He said, Watch and pray lest you enter into temptation. 10:23.780 --> 10:28.800 And that's, I think that just shows exactly why Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane. 10:29.660 --> 10:36.500 Not only was he vigilant, not only was he aware, sober minded, watchful, awake 10:37.200 --> 10:40.300 in the moment where his body desired the opposite, 10:41.220 --> 10:44.780 he was praying why so that he would not enter into temptation 10:45.880 --> 10:52.700 because he had a destiny to fulfill. And if he wasn't in prayer, 10:53.620 --> 10:59.560 he wouldn't have gone through that. And I firmly believe that because of the statement. He said, 10:59.600 --> 11:06.580 Watch and pray lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, 11:06.580 --> 11:11.580 but the flesh is weak. And I feel like we all feel that every moment of the day, 11:12.820 --> 11:22.760 especially as believers of Jesus. Many times we choose the latter instead of the former. 11:24.300 --> 11:28.620 We choose to do what our flesh wants. I'm tired. I'm going to go to bed. 11:29.420 --> 11:32.660 I want to respond in this way because it irritates me. 11:35.420 --> 11:41.460 The spirit is willing. We have such a desire in our spirit to serve the Lord, to spend 11:41.460 --> 11:45.460 eight hours of prayer, to read the word every day, to memorize it. 11:46.900 --> 11:52.080 Our dreams are this big for the Lord, and yet we can only fulfill a little drop. 11:53.900 --> 11:58.020 And that's because we need to discipline our flesh. We need to tie to our flesh, 11:58.020 --> 12:07.000 to the desires of our flesh. And a second time he went away and prayed saying, 12:07.360 --> 12:13.980 Oh my father, if this cup cannot pass away for me unless I drink it, your will be done. 12:16.220 --> 12:20.720 I'm not going to dwell on that too much, but if you've noticed this prayer is different than 12:20.720 --> 12:27.080 the last prayer that he prayed. And there's depth to that. His flesh died even more. 12:28.280 --> 12:31.120 Or he succumbed to the will of the Father even more. 12:33.020 --> 12:37.820 And he came out and found them asleep again for their eyes were heavy. 12:39.280 --> 12:42.860 And in Mark it says that they did not know what to say to him 12:43.480 --> 12:52.160 after he came back the second time. Again, they still heard what he was saying because 12:52.160 --> 12:56.380 that prayer is different than the first prayer. So they had to have been intently 12:56.380 --> 13:04.020 listening to what he was saying. And interesting as far as I can remember, 13:04.200 --> 13:09.640 he doesn't say anything to them that second time. He just left them and he went away again. 13:10.880 --> 13:16.900 And you know, that hurts. And I'm sure the disciples looking back 13:18.420 --> 13:20.380 when the Lord needed them the most. 13:25.860 --> 13:35.680 That hurts. My Jesus was alone in his hour of need. There was not one person who could stand up and 13:35.680 --> 13:49.470 be with him. So he left them and went away again and prayed the third time saying the same words. 13:49.690 --> 13:55.070 And again, they still hurt him because he said the same words. They knew what he was saying. 13:55.070 --> 14:00.270 Yet they chose to follow their flesh and fall asleep and lay down. 14:02.170 --> 14:07.830 Then he came to his disciples and said to them, Are you still sleeping and resting? 14:10.330 --> 14:17.450 Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being 14:17.450 --> 14:25.170 betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going. See, my betrayer is at hand. 14:27.870 --> 14:32.830 And the beauty of that is even if there's people that are so close to us, 14:34.550 --> 14:42.330 people that are on our side, people who have been called to you, 14:43.190 --> 14:47.370 even they will disappoint you and not meet you in your hour of need. You know why? 14:48.270 --> 14:51.690 Because we're born into a world of sin. 14:54.850 --> 15:00.990 And this completely shows how important we need our Heavenly Father, 15:01.590 --> 15:05.170 how important we need Holy Spirit, how important we need Jesus, 15:06.010 --> 15:09.110 because they will never, they will never leave us. 15:11.490 --> 15:16.730 And it's, and even in this, the part where Jesus could have been offended at his close group, 15:17.150 --> 15:22.350 the one that he's given and poured into and given specific assignments to the ones who had 15:22.350 --> 15:28.030 revelations of who he was, this great responsibility of knowing who Jesus is, 15:28.510 --> 15:36.510 to them, the trio, the ones who saw him in a form that no one would see until after the resurrection. 15:39.110 --> 15:46.630 They disappointed him and he could have the full right to be offended. How dare you? 15:47.690 --> 15:53.510 I have given you so much and yet you still disappoint me. You have no right, the audacity 15:53.970 --> 16:02.730 that you have as a human to betray and to go against what I, your Messiah, your God, 16:02.850 --> 16:07.750 I created you in the womb of your mother to go against me. What audacity you have. 16:09.690 --> 16:17.770 But he didn't choose that route. He showed grace and mercy because he understood how hard it is to 16:17.770 --> 16:27.050 defeat our flesh. And that's why he is so good. And we have to remember that, that he is so good. 16:28.730 --> 16:35.070 Because even on our best day, it's like rags before him. He deserves so much better than that. 16:39.580 --> 16:44.780 When I was in youth and I was really starting to encounter the Lord, I was around 16. 16:46.920 --> 16:53.540 Our youth at that time was very small. Maybe consistently came about four to five kids. 16:54.960 --> 17:00.680 And there is our youth pastor who was just a man of God who loved the Lord. 17:05.500 --> 17:10.760 And we all, five, six of us decided to encounter the Lord and seek him out 17:10.760 --> 17:16.100 to the best way that he can lead and guide us, our youth pastor or youth leader. 17:17.280 --> 17:21.820 And so we started doing things that you can only do with a couple of people 17:21.820 --> 17:28.500 instead of a group of 20 or 30. And at that time, right before maybe a year or so, 17:28.500 --> 17:31.140 we used to be a youth group of 30 and 40. 17:33.540 --> 17:37.780 And so one of the things we decided to do was overnight prayers. 17:40.240 --> 17:45.840 And I, again, I love to pray. And that was something that was birthed in me 17:46.660 --> 17:50.640 when I was seeking out the Lord. And I remember being so excited. 17:51.240 --> 17:55.320 We started prayer at 10, I believe, and we went to like two or three in the morning. 17:56.020 --> 17:58.080 If maybe not later, I don't remember. 18:00.020 --> 18:05.580 But I remember we decided to pray. And I don't remember exactly what we were praying about. 18:06.180 --> 18:10.740 I think probably about the youth and for those to have their eyes unveiled and come. 18:12.320 --> 18:18.120 But we were in the side room of the church. And it was kind of closed off. 18:18.260 --> 18:21.720 There was a couple of pews there and there was all four or five of us. 18:22.540 --> 18:27.200 And I remember sitting in the pew or kneeling right in front of the pew 18:27.800 --> 18:30.580 and just seeking out the Lord over what we were praying for. 18:31.660 --> 18:34.200 And then I noticed my flesh becoming weak. 18:35.160 --> 18:40.800 And these thoughts of like, oh, I'm so tired. That's already midnight. I'm tired. 18:43.520 --> 18:46.180 But I had such a hunger for the Lord. 18:48.480 --> 18:52.260 But around that midnight, between midnight and one o'clock, I remember 18:53.280 --> 18:56.160 just wanting to give up, like, oh, I can't wait for this to be done. 18:57.020 --> 19:00.560 My flesh started talking. My knees are tired. 19:01.500 --> 19:05.340 At that time, I went to a church that was a little more conservative. 19:05.340 --> 19:09.060 So I had heels and a skirt on. I had a head covering. 19:09.360 --> 19:12.040 And so I'm uncomfortable because I'm in dress clothes 19:12.580 --> 19:14.980 in the middle of the night at church with four other people. 19:16.180 --> 19:18.440 And I was like, Lord, I want to be done. 19:20.060 --> 19:23.780 And then he said, will you not pray with me one more hour? 19:25.800 --> 19:28.260 Am I more valuable than your flesh? 19:31.200 --> 19:37.780 And that rocked me. And so then I had to... I'm like, okay, I have to. 19:38.260 --> 19:43.160 I can't allow my flesh to win. I can't allow my thoughts to win. 19:43.160 --> 19:44.540 He spoke to me. 19:48.240 --> 19:53.320 And so in that, I remember, in that time, I just... 19:53.320 --> 19:56.280 He gave me perseverance in that prayer. 19:57.040 --> 19:59.980 And we prayed for a couple hours. And if you know for a youth, 20:00.420 --> 20:03.560 for, I think I was maybe 17 or 18 at that time, 20:03.960 --> 20:06.620 to pray for four to five hours in the middle of the night, 20:07.160 --> 20:10.180 that's impossible. I even look back now and I'm like, how? 20:11.660 --> 20:15.220 But there was a remnant of those who loved him. 20:16.100 --> 20:19.200 And we had a youth leader that loved him. 20:20.580 --> 20:26.140 And he encouraged us to leave our homes. 20:27.160 --> 20:29.760 Parents trusted him with us in that church 20:31.480 --> 20:34.040 to seek him out in the middle of the night. 20:35.900 --> 20:38.760 And if I'm not mistaken, it was a Sunday night. 20:38.760 --> 20:40.560 So we had school the next day. 20:41.580 --> 20:45.060 I look back at that, I'm like, who would ever allow that now? 20:46.060 --> 20:48.700 Realistically, I don't... it was the grace of God on that moment. 20:52.600 --> 20:56.080 Being faithful in the little, you will be faithful in the big. 21:02.630 --> 21:06.410 You know, we can conversate with the Lord, with the Holy Spirit every day, 21:06.590 --> 21:10.350 and we have time for that. We can talk to him in our mind, 21:10.390 --> 21:12.930 and we can just have a daily conversation with him. 21:14.950 --> 21:17.810 And I'm not saying that's easy, but it is easier 21:18.490 --> 21:21.250 than setting a time, set away, and saying, 21:21.330 --> 21:25.590 I'm going to petition before my Heavenly Father for something. 21:27.670 --> 21:29.970 That one we tend to, ah, tomorrow. 21:31.070 --> 21:34.390 I'll just, I'll do that tomorrow, wake up early, and then you don't, 21:34.410 --> 21:37.650 and oh, I'll do it on my lunch, and then something pops up, 21:37.710 --> 21:41.090 and that one's harder to do. Your flesh doesn't want to do that. 21:41.090 --> 21:47.990 Because the enemy knows how powerful it is to come into prayer before our Heavenly Father. 21:48.630 --> 21:52.410 There's a difference between conversating with the Holy Spirit day to day, 21:52.510 --> 21:56.470 as he's speaking to us, and petitioning before our Heavenly Father. 21:59.670 --> 22:05.730 So if we're faithful in the little, then we'll be faithful in the much. 22:07.210 --> 22:12.630 If we sow a seed of petitioning, of praying before our Heavenly Father, 22:13.630 --> 22:17.970 we will reap that blessing to the measure that we sow it. 22:19.530 --> 22:24.150 If we sow only one or two seeds, we're only going to get the fruit of two seeds. 22:25.290 --> 22:32.170 But if we consistently, repetitively sow seed after seed of prayer and petition, 22:32.170 --> 22:36.650 and choosing the Lord and the Spirit, instead of choosing our flesh, 22:37.230 --> 22:39.430 we're going to reap even greater things. 22:42.930 --> 22:47.790 And with the measure that we use it, it will be measured back to us. 22:51.380 --> 22:57.140 So if we pray, if we do, I love to pray, so I would rather pray than speak up here. 22:57.600 --> 23:02.200 But if I do prayer in 15 minutes in, you're like, oh, can we be done? 23:04.000 --> 23:10.980 No, we realign ourselves. It's not me, my body, my flesh is not my master. He is my master. 23:12.400 --> 23:19.100 This is not my body. This is his body. I don't get to choose when I want to be done. He gets to choose it. 23:21.120 --> 23:25.980 So it's staying faithful and pressing in when our flesh starts to wander out. 23:27.040 --> 23:30.820 Our thoughts start to go. The pain in our knees starts to 23:30.820 --> 23:32.880 make its voice appearance. 23:35.360 --> 23:40.880 The draining of another prayer. Why are they saying the same thing over and over again? 23:41.640 --> 23:45.480 We get it, move on. No, you're not catching it. 23:47.080 --> 23:51.300 Sometimes we have to say things over and over again because we don't catch it yet. 23:53.160 --> 23:58.360 Stop trying to move past it and go to the greater thing. It starts to get irritated and angry and agitated. I'm locked in with Jesus. He is more important to me than my kids. 24:45.770 --> 24:49.150 And that's a hard statement to say right now, but it's truth. 24:51.450 --> 24:57.190 Because I will be a better mother after that prayer than I am if I'm interrupted and allow my flesh to win. 24:58.890 --> 25:05.910 And don't think I'm so holy, super holy, where that never happens. But I'm still trying to discipline my flesh. 25:11.450 --> 25:18.990 I have to realign my flesh over and over again. I have to break that and fix it again with the Holy Spirit. 25:20.530 --> 25:24.990 Locking our eyes on Jesus. It's pouring our alabaster jar in him. 25:24.990 --> 25:31.650 All this oil that we have. We're breaking it on him. He is worthy of our time. 25:32.730 --> 25:39.230 He is worthy for us to break our jar before him. Our precious oil, the most precious thing we have. 25:39.830 --> 25:44.130 One of the most precious things we have here on earth. Your heart is so precious. 25:53.850 --> 26:00.210 It's realigning our mind and our thoughts back on him. And sometimes I've learned through experience 26:00.210 --> 26:07.270 even physically needing to rearrange and realign myself. Sometimes I feel the heaviness of my 26:07.270 --> 26:15.330 flesh and I have to wake up and I walk and I start pacing. Sometimes that means I have to, 26:15.330 --> 26:24.190 I've done it physically shake myself and command my flesh to be in obedience. Prayer is so important 26:24.190 --> 26:38.500 guys. So important. It's changing our physical posture to reengage with the Lord, to lock our 26:38.500 --> 26:45.520 eyes back with him. If the trio maybe could have not just sat or lied around in their watching 26:46.290 --> 26:53.340 as the Lord asked them to do, they probably would have supported more than with their heavy eyes. 26:56.480 --> 27:06.120 Yet they kept the same posture. And sometimes that same posture is the death of us. 27:17.210 --> 27:23.390 They could have been obedient to the Lord or even vocal.
